Pop star Olivia Rodrigo recently visited Jack White and his Third Man Records outpost in Nashville.

The couple shared photos and a video of the encounter, showing mutual respect. White, the former bandleader and solo artist of the White Stripes, said the “really cool” Rodrigo is introducing Gen Z to vinyl records.

Rodrigo, an avowed white “fangirl”, praised the rocker and said he was a musical hero to her.

“I was lucky enough to meet a talented singer and musician today,” White captioned two photos and a quick clip of the couple meeting at Third Man. “She’s very cool, very real and very in love with music. She’s also introducing another group of young people to the love of vinyl records. Respect.”

In his post from the same outlet, Rodrigo said, “I met my hero of all heroes today. I’m still crying. Thank you [Jack White] for being so nice to your biggest fangirl. everyone go listen fear of dawn!!!!!”

fear of dawn is White’s fourth solo album, released last month. Another white collection, Enter alive in paradise, arrives in July. Rodrigo’s debut LP, last year SOUR – it has the Paramore inspired hit “Good 4 U” – comes in 12 inch black and clear vinyl.

The vinyl record – or phonograph or gramophone – is White’s clearly preferred physical audio music medium. In 2017, he added Third Man Pressing, his own vinyl pressing plant, to Third Man Detroit. (The singer and guitarist launched Third Man Records in 2001, first releasing records on the imprint in 2009.)

Music on vinyl continues to see a confirmed resurgence in 2020. This is the first year that vinyl records have outsold compact discs since the 1980s. In 2021, vinyl had its biggest sales week in the States United since 1991. A producer recently introduced a kind of vinyl-CD hybrid.
