Local vinyl store keeps authentic sounds alive

One of the few in the Valley, the record store offers vinyl records of all genres and from all eras.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — In a world full of technology, music is available at our fingertips, but finding authentic sound can take a little time.

Geo’s is a record store in downtown Youngstown. One of the few in the Valley, it offers vinyl records of all genres and from all eras.

“You have people who really like real sound, so they want to hear that wave, like it’s meant to be,” said George Case, owner of Geo’s.

Case opened the store in 1997. It started with around 1,000 records. Now there are thousands of them.

Case said listening to music on vinyl is not the same as listening to it in digital format.

“If you care about real music and the way the artist intended it to sound, a record is the truest and closest thing to a real instrument…it sounds warmer to the ears” , did he declare.

Although the digital age makes it possible to stream and share music, he says there’s nothing quite like listening to the raw, original sound of a record.

He himself is a musician. His band, Geo C and Tha Storm, have been playing throughout the region for years. He said his love and passion for music extends beyond one type.

“This is art, the more art we make, and even the building itself, will become art…and that’s what music is supposed to be, it’s supposed to be art” , did he declare.

He says that many people collect records and will come from other cities just to check out the records in his shop. He thinks it’s also a good way to attract people downtown.

Case said he was expanding the store. He will add even more records and start hosting DJ nights where people can come eat and listen to music.

Geo’s also sells CDs, cassettes and DVDs. They are currently open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday and 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

You can find more information about the types of discs offered by the store on its website and Instagram page.
