MUSIC fans can have a treat if they have a popular vinyl record at home – the most valuable recently selling for $ 1,691.
This is because vinyl sales topped CD sales last year for the first time since 1986, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIIA).
And the trend continues to grow, with vinyl sales up 108% in the first six months of 2021 year-on-year, entertainment analytics firm MRC Data said.
With a new generation of music fans discovering the world of vinyl records, it means your old collection could be worth a fortune for the right buyer.
As with any collector’s item, for a vinyl to be of value it is usually both rare and in demand.
You will also usually get a higher price if the condition of the record and cover art is as close to new as possible.
We scanned completed listings on eBay to determine which ones are most popular for buyers in the United States.
From Prince to Kiss, here’s what we found.
Jus’ Us – Just Us Together – $ 1,691
The most valuable vinyl record, based on the recently completed eBay listings, was Jus’ Us’s Just Us Together track.
The soul funk record was produced in 1973 by Thomas McGee.
While he may not be as well-known as the other bands, he still racked up 18 auctions and then sold for $ 1,691 on eBay a few weeks ago.
The single was sold by Carolina Soul Record.
Prince – Black Album – $ 1,525
Then, a limited edition of Prince’s Black Album sold for $ 1,525 on eBay in September.
The Black Album was his 16th studio album and it was released in 1994.
Meanwhile, the promotional 1987 version did not have a print title, artist name, production credits, or print photograph.
The eBay seller noted that the vinyl record was a “limited edition on white wax,” which may explain the high price.
Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin II – $ 1,325
English rock bank Led Zeppelin released Led Zeppelin II in 1986 – and as you might expect, it was their second studio album.
It features some of his most popular songs including Ramble On, Heartbreaker as well as Whole Lotta Lova.
By 1999, the album had sold over 12 million copies.
A Robert Ludwig hot mix edition recently sold for $ 1,325 on eBay, after racking up 63 bids.
Horace Parlan – Us Three – $ 990
If you’re a Horaco Parlan fan, you might be happy to hear that a vinyl record featuring Us Three recently sold on eBay for $ 990.
The album features performances recorded and released by the jazz pianist in 1960.
The eBay seller noted that side 1 had a few more scratches, while side 2 is cleaner but has a few passages of slight surface noise.
He added: “Overall a solid play copy.”
Thad Jones – Mad Thad – $ 940
A Thad Jones vinyl record featuring Mad Thad fetched a price of $ 940 on eBay last month, after attracting 15 bids from music enthusiasts.
He was an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and conductor, born near Detroit in Pontiac, Michigan.
The likely reason this particular album was so coveted is that it was never played.
So while it may be a good investment and a collector’s item, keep in mind that the value will likely drop if you decide to listen to the album.
Kiss – Alive II – $ 912
Another vinyl record in mint condition was this album Alive II by Kiss, which recently sold for $ 911.99 after receiving 35 bids.
Similar to the above, it has never been played and the vinyl record has not been opened.
The album Alive II was Kiss’s second live album, and it was released in 1977 by Casablanca Records.
The eBay listing noted that the vinyl record had “small amounts of shrinkage exposure” in all of the corners and the top left corner was cut off.
What to do if you have a valuable vinyl record
If you think you have a vinyl record that is worth a bit more then you should do your research first.
Find out how much your record is worth to a collector by viewing identical or similar albums under “listings sold” on eBay.
Compare your LP to other top selling auctions and ask yourself if it is in a similar condition? Is it genuine? Is it still in its original packaging?
If it’s in pristine condition, it may be worth selling through an auction house or directly on a collectibles website.
If not, it’s probably worth sticking it on eBay for a small fee.
Avid collectors might also want to take a look at the more valuable error coins, with a value of up to $ 599.
You could also get up to $ 13,661 for your old phone – check to see if you have one of value at home.
Last month, Pokemon Oreos was selling for $ 15,100 each online.
